Final day! Wow
Nearly a year in the planning and preparation and now after this final 16 miles it will be over. Not sure how I will feel when I see the North Sea into Robin Hoods Bay.
The walk from Grosmont starts off in a brutal way. A Mile slog uphill right from the start. The gradient is 1 in 3!!!
After 11 days of sunshine, today started off misty and a lot of low fog. Walking back up to the moors through the mist it was very quiet and spooky with just the lap wings keeping me company and shrieking at me to keep away from their ground nests….
It was all moors for an hour or so then down into Little Beck and then into Little Beck wood. This wood has been likened to something out of Lord of the Rings before and you can see why when you enter the wood. It follows the river through the centre of the wood until you come to a cave. The cave is called the Heritage Cave and looks like something from King Arthur. then onto the waterfall where I stopped for coffee and Scones! Lovely!
It was around 10:30 when I set off again moving across yet another moor where I came across my second Adder. A much large version who hissed and spat at me for disturbing him. I nearly trod on it as it tried to catch the warmth of the sun. I then put my jacket on as the first rain of my trip came, it only lasted 5 mins before the sun came out again.
Then it was straightforward walk across the cliffs into Robin Hoods Bay.
As is the case with most places around here, RHB is at the bottom of a hill, so a steep walk down to the bay was a struggle for the muscles, but at the bottom a welcome beer and scampi and chips was had at the bay hotel.
I signed the Coast to Coast book as a memory of my trip and felt somewhat strange. No more planning and prep for the next days walk!
The walk was over! sad and slightly flat.
Said my goodbyes to Dek, who I had walked with some days when he arrived and caught my taxi to Scarborough. From here I took a train to York and then caught the train to stevenage.
Keeley and Mia met me at stevenage and drove me home.
The end of the best adventure ever…..
