Leaving the Lion Inn after a great breakfast and a restfull sleep was hard. But the sun was shining and there was only 14.5 miles to go today. The first 2 miles was another horseshoe route away from the Lion Inn, so I could still see this place for the first 45 mins or so.
The going was pretty straightforward, follow the road for a few miles passing the oddly names Fat Betty (where you are supposed to give and take a snack left by other walkers. I declined this kind tradition and just took a photo or two.
There was a signpost after a hour which led me onto the moors again properly. This path was pretty straightforward to navigate as it followed the ridge of a valley around to Glaisdale. The path into (or down into I should say) is very very straight for a least a mile and this is where is saw my first snake. The snake was an Adder and poisonous! I was told that Adders can kill a small dog, but is not usually fatal to Human’s although you should seek attention if you are bitten. These adders love the moors and it wasn’t the last one I saw over the next 2 days.
It was crossing my path so I played with it for a little while with my walking poles until it got fed up and slid away. It was about 2 foot in length.
walking into Glaisdale was lovely, but very steep again. going through Glaisdale you descend around 100metres and then climb again. I bet its a lovely place to be in a flood!!
Popped into the local pub for a quick pint and a sandwich and then carried on. Up, through and over a small wood running next to the river and down into Egton Bridge, which was a lovely traditional village. Passed an old tool road and then into Grosmont.
Grosmont has an old steam line running through it and is pretty famous for steam enthusiast as I was to find out when the first steam train came through and the line was engulfed with photo takers.
Stayed at the Old Station Tavern, which was expensive for the room. Arranged to leave around 7:30 next morning skipping breakfast to ensure I get a good start on my final day.
