Day 3 – Grasmere

So knee (left one) was really sore last night and this morning, strapped it up and loaded up on pain killers.  Breakfast done and gingerly made my way out of Rosthwaite heading up and over a Huge beast called Greenup Edge, it sort of teases you as you get to ‘the top’ only to see when you get there that there is still another 100 metre summit to tackle, this happened not once, but three times.  Getting up to Lining Crag you are literally scrambling up on all fours, proper climbing!  Don’t look down David, was said about 100 times over a nervous 15 mins.  Then you have a little ridge walk to the other side, views are amazing and I have the sunburnt face to compliment the perfect blue sky.

The top of Greenup Edge down takes bit of navigating as you don’t want to take the wrong way 600 metres up, had some discussions with an Australian Father and daughter, checked maps and confirmed its south east..  You gradually decend through very boggy ground over boulders and rocks until the path splits off ridge walk and valley walk, I took the valley walk as I thought would be kinder on the knees.  Well descending 600 metres over a mile takes time, wading through boggy ground and over uneven rocks is a challenge whilst following the beck all the way down you are graced with water falls.

Now this valley was extremely windy, I think its a bit of a wind tunnel as it nearly knocked me over a few times.  Half way down this gust of wind came up with out notice and right next to me was a twister, the wind had picked up all the debris on the ground (just light dead grass) and there was a twister about 25 feet from me.  Only lasted 15 seconds but pretty scary and didn’t think to get my camera out in time – Too Scared!

Took an hour to navigate down, then a further hour for the walk into Grasmere.

The hotel I am in is lovely and has a bath!, still no blisters so all good.

40 ish miles in now.

Only 9 miles today but because this was pretty vertical I was only covering 1.5 miles an hour and for some it was more like a mile an hour…
